The Karcher SG 4/1 steam cleaner heats steam to 120°C, effectively dissolving stubborn dirt and killing bacteria. The high temperature ensures deep penetration into fabric fibers without damaging the material.
The Prochem Everest 400 extractor creates a powerful suction flow that pulls dissolved dirt and moisture from deep within the upholstery. This ensures quick drying and prevents streaks.
We use only certified eco-friendly products Kiehl and Sodasan, which contain no harsh chemicals. They are hypoallergenic and safe even for newborns and pets.
Steam treatment at 120°C destroys 99.9% of bacteria, viruses, and dust mites. This is especially important for allergy and asthma sufferers — after cleaning, the air becomes cleaner.
Each object is inspected by our quality controller after cleaning. If defects or missed spots are found, we re-clean the problem areas for free.
We guarantee removal of 95% of stains. If any stain remains, we refund the cost for that item. Your confidence is our priority.

Steam cleaning is effective against most dirt, but there are stains it cannot handle or that may damage the fabric. It’s important to understand these limitations to avoid ruining the upholstery. Here at profi-clean, we often see the consequences of choosing the wrong method — let’s break them down so you don’t repeat others’ mistakes.
Steam dissolves water-soluble dirt, but grease and oil do not react with it. The high temperature only heats the grease film, “baking” it deeper into the fibers. On kitchen sofas and microfiber chairs, such stains become darker and more noticeable after steam. In our practice, there was a case: a client tried to remove an oil stain from khinkali on a sofa — steam only set it. On such areas, we use a pre-treatment degreaser based on citrus solvents (Kiehl K1), which breaks down the grease before the steam carries the residue to the surface. Natural oils — coconut, olive — behave the same way: steam won’t remove them; an emulsifying chemical is needed, followed by water extraction. If you spill oil on upholstery, don’t touch it with steam — blot it with a paper towel and call a specialist with a grease stain kit.
Protein coagulates under high temperature — just like egg white when boiled. Steam cleaning on set-in blood or milk stains fixes them permanently: the protein coagulates and embeds into the fabric structure. Fresh blood (up to 2–3 hours) is easily removed by steam, but if a day has passed — steam will only make it worse. The same goes for egg or milk porridge stains on a carpet: hot steam “cooks” the protein, and removing it later requires mechanical removal of the top layer of pile. We treat such areas with a cold enzyme solution (Sodasan Fleckenentferner), which breaks down the protein into a water-soluble state — only then do we apply steam at 110 °C. Set-in protein stains require pre-soaking for 20–30 minutes, otherwise steam will set them.
Water-soluble inks (watercolor markers, gel pens) are effectively washed out by steam — they dissolve in the condensate and are removed with the steam. However, alcohol-based and permanent markers (Sharpie, CD markers) are not removed by steam: the alcohol base does not mix with water, and the coloring pigment penetrates deep into polyester or cotton fibers. We encountered a sofa that a child had drawn on with a permanent marker — after steam, the stain only spread because the heat softened the pigment but did not remove it. Such stains require an alcohol-based solvent (isopropyl alcohol 90%+) applied pointwise with a cotton swab, with steam used only for final rinsing. Gel pen ink on car upholstery — steam works if the ink is fresh; dried ink requires pre-soaking in a soapy solution.
Chewing gum, hot glue, pine resin — steam only worsens the problem. High temperature softens the glue, causing it to spread over a larger area and penetrate deeper into the fabric. We recommend the opposite method: freeze the stain with an ice cube in a bag (10–15 minutes), then mechanically scrape off the hardened glue with a spatula. If a greasy resin residue remains after freezing, it is removed with a solvent (mineral spirits on cotton, isopropyl alcohol on synthetics), and only then is a final steam treatment applied. On high-pile carpets, chewing gum without freezing melts into the base — steam will make it sticky and inseparable from the pile. We had a call in the Bostandyk district: a child glued stickers with hot glue onto a sofa — steam only softened the glue, smearing it over a large area. We had to remove the stickers mechanically and then treat the area with alcohol.
The internet says steam removes urine odor — this is only true for fresh stains. On old urine stains (especially cat urine), steam fixes uric acid: when heated, uric acid crystals dissolve and penetrate deeper into the sofa or mattress filling. After drying, the odor returns — the crystals form again, but now deep inside the foam. Cat urine contains the protein felinine, which coagulates and bonds to fabric when heated above 60°C — the odor becomes permanent. We treat urine stains with an enzyme neutralizer (Nature’s Miracle or equivalent) 30 minutes before steaming: enzymes break down urea and uric acid into ammonia and carbon dioxide, which are removed by the steam. Without this preparation, steam cleaning will only make the situation worse. Fresh urine stains (up to 6 hours old) are removed perfectly by steam — the urine hasn’t crystallized yet, and hot condensate washes it out of the fibers. If the odor remains after steaming, it means the crystals are already in the filling, requiring deep extraction with enzymes.
Turmeric, beetroot, blueberries, cherries — natural dyes that steam does not remove but sets. The pigment penetrates fibers at a molecular level, and high temperature fixes it like fabric dyeing. On cotton and linen upholstery (kitchen chairs, tablecloths), such stains become almost impossible to remove after steaming. We use an oxygen bleach (3% hydrogen peroxide on light fabrics, enzyme stain remover on dark fabrics) with a 15–20 minute dwell time, then steam washes out the reaction byproducts. On synthetics (polyester, microfiber), food pigments hold less strongly — steam sometimes helps if the stain is fresh (up to an hour). Red wine on a sofa: steam washes out tannins, but anthocyanins (coloring agents) remain — they need pre-treatment with salt or citric acid. Turmeric on a carpet is one of the most difficult cases: the curcumin pigment does not dissolve in water, steam only heats it up, and the stain turns an even brighter yellow. The solution is an alcohol solution (70% isopropanol) with mechanical scrubbing using a brush, followed by steam to remove alcohol residues.
Urine and tobacco odors are the most persistent in upholstered furniture and carpets, and steam is the only method that destroys them at a molecular level rather than masking them. We use industrial steam generators with steam temperatures up to 150°C to remove even old, ingrained odors.
Urine contains uric acid, which crystallizes upon drying and does not dissolve in plain water. A steam jet at 120–150°C softens these crystals and converts them into a soluble state, after which a vacuum extractor removes them from the fibers. For old stains on sofas or mattresses, we pre-apply an enzyme cleaner (bacteria-based enzyme spray) that breaks down proteins, then treat with steam — this achieves up to 95% effectiveness compared to 60% with dry cleaning. Without this breakdown, uric acid crystals re-adhere to the fabric upon the next wetting — for example, from air conditioning or rain during Almaty’s humid spring. On mattresses with children’s stains, the odor is completely removed in one pass, but on old sofas (5+ years), two cycles with a drying interval may be required.
Tobacco smoke contains nicotine, tars, and phenols that settle on fibers as a sticky film — regular vacuum cleaners and cleaning agents only spread it around. Steam cleaning dissolves this film due to high temperature and pressure, and a powerful extractor pulls out the dirt along with the odor. Ozonators, often touted in Almaty as a cure-all for odors, only oxidize volatile compounds in the air but do not touch the residue inside the fabric — the odor returns from the depths within 2–3 days. In our experience with jobs on smoke-laden sofas from apartments in the “Samal” and “Duman” microdistricts, nicotine concentration in an ammonia test drops from high levels to zero after steam cleaning, whereas a significant portion remains after ozonation. On dense fabrics (microfiber, herringbone), one cycle is sufficient; on pile fabrics (velvet, flock), two cycles are needed with intermediate drying using a blower.
The most common mistake in Almaty is trying to wash away urine or tobacco stains with bleach or vinegar, which destroys the fabric dye and locks in the odor through a chemical reaction. Bleach oxidizes urea into chloramine — which is toxic and smells even sharper, while acetic acid preserves uric acid crystals, making them insoluble. The second typical mistake is using household steam cleaners (Karcher SC, Polaris) with steam temperatures up to 100°C and weak suction power: they moisten the fabric but don’t extract dissolved dirt, and the smell returns within a day. In our orders for upholstered furniture from private homes in “Gorny Gigant,” clients spent significant amounts on renting a steam cleaner and buying chemicals before calling us, but the result lasted at most a week. The right approach is to immediately call a service with industrial equipment: it’s cheaper per successful cycle than three failed DIY attempts.
The choice between steam and chemicals is the main debate in cleaning. In practice, we see that no single method is universal, and a mistake in selection can ruin the upholstery or leave streaks. I’ll explain what works and when, without risking the fabric.
Steam cleaning is 80–90% more effective than dry cleaning for three scenarios: stubborn odors (urine, tobacco, mold), allergens (dust mites, pet dander), and grease stains on synthetics. Steam penetrates 5–8 mm into the sofa filling, dissolves dirt without residue, and kills bacteria at 120–140°C — no powder or foam works this way. On cotton, linen, and microfiber with water-repellent coating, steam leaves no streaks, unlike chemicals that crystallize on the pile. In our practice in Almaty, where spring humidity reaches 70%, steam drying in 4–6 hours is the only way to avoid a musty smell. On silk, velvet, and viscose, steam is contraindicated — only dry cleaning with minimal moisture works there.
Dry cleaning is gentle on decorative fabrics with an adhesive layer (jacquard, tapestry) and on furniture with low-density polyurethane foam filling — steam softens the glue and deforms the pattern. On hand-woven Persian wool carpets, steam tightens the fibers, while dry foam works without shrinkage. Another scenario is a quick refreshing clean in rental apartments in Almaty: dry cleaning dries in 1–2 hours versus 4–6 for steam. But remember: dry foam does not remove urine odors or kill mold — it only masks them for 2–3 weeks, after which the smell returns.
Method | Penetration Depth | Odor Removal | Drying Time | Fabric Risk — | — | — | — | — Steam Cleaning (profi-clean) | 5–8 mm into filling | 95% of odors (urine, tobacco) | 4–6 hours | Minimal on dense fabrics Extractor Cleaning (water-based chemical) | 2–3 mm | 70% (depends on chemicals) | 3–5 hours | Moderate (streaks on synthetics) Dry Cleaning (foam/powder) | 0.5–1 mm | 30–40% (masking) | 1–2 hours | Low on delicate fabrics
Steam cleaning penetrates deeper into the filling and takes longer to dry, but provides lasting results. Extractor cleaning is faster but leaves moisture inside the sofa — in Almaty apartments with poor ventilation, this often leads to mold within six months. Dry cleaning is good for quick maintenance but doesn’t solve stubborn stains — on carpets with children’s stains, it’s useless.
Water in Almaty is hard (7–9 °dH), and during steam cleaning, white salt streaks can appear on dark furniture if a demineralizer isn’t used. At profi-clean, we install reverse osmosis filters on our steam generators — this provides soft water (0–1 °dH) without residue. With dry cleaning, hardness doesn’t matter — the chemicals act as a buffer. But if you order steam cleaning from an unverified technician, ask if they treat the water — otherwise, after drying, white spots may appear on the sofa, which can only be removed with a repeat treatment. This defect is invisible on light fabrics but immediately noticeable on dark blue or burgundy velvet.
Check these points before ordering — they determine which method suits you:
Steam cleaning handles most soiling, but the fabric’s reaction to heat and moisture depends on its composition, weave density, and finish. Our experience in Almaty shows: some materials look like new after steam, while others shrink or lose color. Let’s break down which fabrics steam cleans safely and which require a special approach.
Cotton and linen handle steam without issues — the fiber withstands up to 140 °C, with minimal shrinkage if dried quickly. Wool is trickier: direct contact with a steam nozzle causes it to felt (mat), so we treat wool carpets and throws only from a distance of 15–20 cm through a protective microfiber cloth. Moisture after cleaning should not exceed 20%, otherwise natural fibers deform during drying. In practice in Almaty, steam is most often used on cotton sofas and linen curtains — they dry in 3–4 hours in summer and don’t lose their shape. On wool coverings, we use minimal heat (120 °C) and immediately blow them with cold air.
Polyester and nylon are the safest for steam: they melt at 200+ °C, while the steam cleaner’s working temperature is 130–150 °C. But there’s a catch — acrylic and microfiber lose their pile with prolonged steam exposure: pilling appears on chairs with acrylic upholstery after 2–3 treatments. Our rule: clean synthetics with a “top-to-bottom” motion, not lingering on one spot for more than 3–4 seconds. In Almaty, steam cleaning is often ordered for office chairs made of mesh nylon — steam excellently blows dust out of the cells, and the fabric doesn’t stretch even after 10 cycles.
Silk and viscose are risk zones: under steam exposure, they shrink by up to 10% and lose their luster due to fibril damage. We do not treat silk with steam, even at low temperatures — only dry cleaning with special foam compounds. Blended fabrics (cotton + polyester) behave predictably if the synthetic percentage is above 40%. Tencel (lyocell) is durable, but with excess moisture, it stretches when wet; after cleaning, we fix the shape with an air blower. In Almaty, the most common problems are with viscose sofas, which, after steam cleaning by inexperienced technicians, shrink by the size of a cushion.
For carpets, the key characteristic is the pile height and type. Low-pile carpets (berber, sisal) are cleaned by steam in one pass, with dirt coming out on the first application. High-pile carpets (saxony, frieze) require pre-brushing: if you apply steam immediately, dirt gets baked inside the pile. Our cleaners always check the carpet for colorfastness before steam treatment — by rubbing an inconspicuous corner with a damp white cloth. If the cloth picks up color, we lower the temperature to 110 °C and use minimal moisture. In Almaty apartments with hand-woven carpets (wool + silk), we switch to cold fog — we don’t use steam at all to avoid damaging the warp threads.
The frequency of steam treatment depends not on the calendar, but on three factors: intensity of use, type of upholstery, and the microclimate of Almaty apartments. There is no universal number — here’s how we select intervals for different scenarios.
Sofa in the living room — a daily contact zone: dust, sebum, crumbs, pet hair. We’ve noticed: if the interval exceeds 8 months, steam cleaning can no longer fully remove the fatty deposits that clog the fabric’s micropores. On microfiber and flock, after 9–10 months without treatment, a sticky film appears, visible only under UV light — and it attracts new dust. The optimal cycle is once every six months, and in families with children or pets, once every 4 months. Our practical tip: set a reminder for spring and autumn — in Almaty, humidity is high during these seasons, and the sofa dries faster than in winter.
A carpet on the floor is the number one dust collector: over a year, up to 2–3 kg of dust settles in its pile, even with regular dry cleaning. Annual steam cleaning removes this dust along with allergens and bacteria. Natural wool and viscose require a less frequent cycle — once every 15–18 months, because steam destroys the natural oils in the fiber, and frequent treatment makes it brittle. Synthetics (polypropylene, polyamide) withstand annual cleaning without losing color. An important nuance for Almaty: in homes with a “warm floor” system, the carpet dries 2–3 times faster, so the interval can be reduced to 10–12 months without the risk of mold.
A mattress is an accumulation zone for dust mites and dead skin cells. For a healthy person, annual steam cleaning is sufficient — it removes up to 99% of mites and their excrement. But if there is an allergy or asthma sufferer in the family, we recommend a cycle of once every six months: within 6 months, the mite population recovers to its original level. Steam treatment does not damage fillers — coconut coir, latex, memory foam — if the temperature at the nozzle outlet does not exceed 120 °C. Our experience: on orthopedic mattresses, after an annual cycle, less dust remains than on budget models with polyurethane foam — due to the denser fabric structure, so the interval for them can be increased to 14 months.
Chairs and armchairs in high-use areas (office, kitchen) get dirty the fastest: they are exposed to grease, sweat, and sebum daily. We clean office chairs for corporate clients once a quarter — and that’s enough to keep the fabric from looking worn or starting to smell. For kitchen chairs with fabric upholstery, it’s better to shorten the interval to 3 months: cooking vapors settle on the back and seat, forming an oily film that attracts dust. The exception is chairs with leatherette: wiping them with a damp sponge is sufficient; steam cleaning is needed once every 6 months to disinfect the seams.
Instead of a calendar schedule, rely on three signals. First — smell: if after airing out, the sofa or carpet smells musty or like a “dusty rag,” steam is needed immediately, regardless of the last treatment. Second — a visual test: run a damp white cloth over the upholstery — if it leaves a gray or yellow mark, more dirt has accumulated than the fabric can handle. Third — skin reaction: if your legs itch or redness appears after sitting on the sofa, the concentration of dust mites in the pile is exceeded. In Almaty, where ragweed and poplar bloom in spring and autumn, these signals arrive 1–2 months earlier than the average time — residents of southern districts (Almalinsky, Bostandyk) should check upholstery every 3–4 months, rather than every six months.
The climate and water supply of Almaty create unique conditions for steam cleaning: hard water leaves salt deposits on equipment, and desert dust from the mountains penetrates deep into fabrics. Without considering these factors, the procedure loses its effectiveness.
Water in Almaty’s water supply contains up to 7-8 mg-eq/l of hardness salts — twice the norm for professional steam cleaners. When heated to 140°C, calcium and magnesium salts settle on the heater and inside the steam generator as a layer of scale, which reduces steam temperature by 10-15°C after just 50 hours of operation. At profi-clean, we use a demineralization system at the inlet — a replaceable cartridge with ion-exchange resin that traps up to 95% of salts. After reverse osmosis, the steam temperature remains stable, and deposits are not transferred to sofa upholstery. Before ordering steam cleaning, check with the technician whether they use water softening — carpets in Almaty turn white from a salt film due to hard water after just the second cleaning.
Fine dust from the Taklamakan Desert and construction sites in Almaty does not settle on the surface but penetrates deep into carpet pile and furniture filling — up to 3-5 cm. A steam jet at 5-6 bar pressure washes out this dust along with road grime, bitumen particles, and de-icing agents, but only if dry vacuum cleaning with a HEPA filter is performed first. Without it, steam “bakes” the dust inside the fabric, and a gray residue appears after drying. Our practice shows: in residential buildings on Abay and Dostyk Avenues, the dust layer depth in sofas reaches 2 cm over 3 years, and a single steam cleaning without prior vacuuming yields 60% results instead of 95%. We always start with a powerful industrial vacuum cleaner with a turbo brush — this is a mandatory step, not an option.
In central Almaty — in houses on Panfilov and Kabanbay Batyr Streets — “everyday household” dust from old furniture and 1990s carpeting prevails, saturated with tobacco smoke and kitchen fumes. In residential areas (Alatau, Nauryzbay, Zhetysu districts), sand from vacant lots and soot from stove heating in the private sector are added to the dust. Steam cleaning in such apartments requires a two-pass treatment: first, steam with a pre-spray of enzyme solution to break down grease films, then a second steaming with clean water. In the center, one pass at 130°C suffices, while in houses on the outskirts, 140°C and a double dose of steam are needed. Our cleaners determine the mode visually — by the color of the water flowing from the extractor: if dark gray, the contamination is heavy and a second round is required.
In spring and autumn, dirt from lawns and pedestrian paths enters apartments — bitumen, sand, clay, which steam softens but does not always remove without a mechanical brush. In winter, the main problem is de-icing agents on sidewalks (sand-salt mixture), which settle on hallway carpets and corrode the pile if not washed out with steam within 24 hours. In summer, poplar fluff and pollen clog into the fabric and form a sticky layer when moistened.
